Week 5: Golf Bags, Rentals & Shipping Clubs—What You Need to Know

Week 5: Golf Bags, Rentals & Shipping Clubs—What You Need to Know

Let’s face it—your clubs are your trusted tools. You’ve dialed in your driver, found the right wedge bounce, and finally got used to that putter. So when you’re heading out on a golf trip, the first question many golfers ask is:

“Do I bring my own clubs, rent at the resort, or ship them?”

As a travel advisor and avid golfer, I’ve dealt with every scenario. And in this post, I’ll help you figure out the best option for your next golf getaway.

Option 1: Bringing Your Clubs With You

Bringing your own clubs is often the go-to choice for golfers who are particular about their setup or plan to play multiple rounds.

✅ Pros:

  • You know your clubs.

  • No surprises on the course.

  • No rental fees.

❌ Cons:

  • Bulky travel.

  • Potential for airline damage or lost bags.

  • Airline baggage fees ($35–$75+ per leg depending on airline).

🛠️ My Tip: If you’re flying with your clubs, invest in a high-quality travel case (hard-shell if possible) and pack your clubs tightly with towels around the heads. I can also help you choose the best airline for golf travelers based on your route and baggage policy.

Option 2: Renting Clubs at the Course

Most high-end resorts and public courses offer quality rental sets, including newer models from Titleist, Callaway, or TaylorMade.

✅ Pros:

  • Travel light.

  • No stress about lost luggage.

  • Good option for casual golfers or newer players.

❌ Cons:

  • Rental availability may vary.

  • Might not have your preferred shaft, flex, or grip.

  • Limited inventory for lefties or specific brands.

🛠️ My Tip: I always check rental inventory in advance and secure a set that fits your needs. If you're traveling internationally or to a high-demand resort, advanced booking is a must.

Option 3: Shipping Your Clubs

Services like Ship Sticks or Luggage Forward let you send your clubs directly to your destination.

✅ Pros:

  • Door-to-door convenience.

  • Avoids airline hassles.

  • Often includes tracking and insurance.

❌ Cons:

  • Costs vary ($80–$160+ round trip).

  • Requires advance planning.

🛠️ My Tip: I’ll walk you through how to ship safely and help you time the delivery. I’ll also confirm with the resort or course that they’ll receive and store your clubs upon arrival.

So… Which Option is Right for You?

It depends on your:

  • Budget

  • Travel style

  • Number of rounds

  • Destination

If you’re playing 3+ rounds and serious about performance, bring or ship your own. If you’re only squeezing in one round and want to travel light, rentals might do just fine.
